Finds on the archaeological sites
Naturally, no one today can claim that archaeological finds are true artifact - the prototype of modern products: in ancient times there were many attempts to create a weapon like the hammer of Thor. For this reason, there are many copies of it.
In the area near the Kobelev city, on the island of Lolland (formerly known as Laaland), archaeologists discovered the unique Viking amulet - Thor's hammer, which scientists refer to the tenth century. Many of such amulets had been found in Northern Europe that is considered a country of the Vikings. But this one is the only of its kind, since it has a runic inscription on it, or runeskript, «Hmar x is» (here is a mistake, "hammer" is written as «Hamar»). The size of the rune is not big - up to 7 mm. Due to the effects of corrosion and a small size, the inscription required lots of effort to read it.
Another part of the history of "The Thor`s hammer" is related to the item found in Norfolk. Its prototype could have been a really existing hammer. But these assumptions dispelled when the second artifact had been found in Northern Germany, and after that - three more, in the Kent County, Liverpool and on the Skone island.
The finds on the territory of Rus
These findings are a clear indication of the Scandinavian presence on the territory of Rus in 9-10 centuries. The symbol of the Scandinavian god of thunder was repeatedly detected in the form of miniature pendants-amulets made in different variations.
First variation is the silver pendants, very elegant products made using filigree technique, covered with gold. Second - items of coarser forms found on archaeological sites with ancient grivnas.
Both variants have been found on the territory of Ancient Ladoga, in the Novgorod Rurich's Gorodische, lots of hammers were found in Gnezdovo and in the region of Rostov Veliky, in Yaroslavl, in Tymerev Mound Repository.
The Thor`s hammer - is one of the most vivid elements of Scandinavian culture in general and mythology in particular. Today, Mjolnir is used on the emblem of the Swedish commune Tursos.
Referring to the Saxons` writings, Mjolnir could have been worn by a decent man, who had an open mind and noble thoughts, never planned evil deeds against others, and had no pride or anger in the heart. If any of these was violated, the hammer flew away and disappeared out of sight of its owner.
The replicas of the Thor's hammer were extremly popular as an amulet or a talisman and were worn around the neck. In addition, they have been used in sacred ceremonies, for example the wedding ceremonies. The amulets were put under the bed of the newlyweds, it was believed that it would bring many children to the family. After the acceptance of Christianity, people usually wore the amulet ‘The Thor`s hammer” together with a cross.
Extracts from the legend
According to the ancient legend, the Thor's hammer, called "Mjolnir" was a magic weapon of the god Thor, the son of the supreme god Odin and earthly goddess Jörð.
The legend says that Thor used his hammer in order to destroy his enemies, horrifying them and sending thunder and lightning on them, sending them back to the underworld. On the other hand the hammer of Thor is a symbol, that gives the will to live and destroys the obstacles that slow down the growth. Rebirth and fertility stand in opposition to the forces of Chaos. The vital energy of Mjolnir is opposed to the demonic symbols: misery, decay, spiritual, natural and material destruction.
Mjolnir (destroyer) was as light as a feather; nevertheless, it was fatal and irresistible weapon, which, by the way, was able not only to kill, but also to revive. As soon as the Thunderer threw the hammer, it came back like a boomerang, in the hands of its owner. The legends mention that only Thor and his sons (Módi and Magni) could lift the hammer. Thor also wore steel gloves (without them he could not even hold a red-hot handle of the hammer) and the belt that doubled its power.
Mjolnir was forged by dwarves - Sindri and Brock. And then was brought to Asgard by Loki who had questioned the skill of the blacksmiths. The short handle of the Mjolnir is a consequence of Loki`s attempts to interfere with its production.
The hammer was recognized as the best creation of the dwarves, so Loki lost the dispute, and his mouth was sewed up. Odin forbade the dwarves to cut down the head to quirky god- he put it on the mortgage in a dispute.
The hammer of Thor often fell into the wrong hands. And the Thunderer had to save it. Often - thanks to cunning and inventive Loki.
The meaning of the amulet
The best material for the manufacture of Mjolnir is silver. Since this noble metal enhances the magical power of the amulet. The symbol is found in both male and female ornaments and is universal. By the way, the amulet can not be worn together with the symbols of the snake, because the Serpent is considered to be the Thor`s main enemy.
Amulet is worn around the neck all the time, and not only does not lose its magical power, but also takes energy from the enemies, weakening them.
Amulet Mjolnir supports reliability, strength of the wearer, his ielligence, honesty, impulsive nature. It helps to resolve crisis situations. Talisman especially helps people whose professional activity is connected to the conflict, confrontation and war - emergency workers, security guards, bodyguards, military.
