Special Viking axe from Mammen. Prototype of a product
Scandinavian ritual axe was found during excavations in the beneath mound tomb on the territory of a place called 'Mammen'. Based on the data of chronological analysis of logs found in the tomb, it was built in 970-71 years in winter. Implements found in a tomb is dated by 950-970 years. The most valuable find was covered with blackened silver sheet (technique called niello) with forged decor on top. An ornament is a triplet. Images are separated by diagonal cross shaped slot - apparently in ancient times they were filled with bronze-zinc foil.
Here, together with its owner - leading Viking, a contemporary of King Harald Bluetooth and Gorm, axe rested for a long period of time - after that winter it has not been seen for thousands of years. The size of the find is 17, 5 centimeters, the handle of the axe was not preserved - only its metal part was lowered into the grave.
Historians believe that this axe was purely ritualistic and was not used as a weapon. But, anyway, the Vikings believed that only the warriors who died in the battle would come to heaven, and for them the war itself was the most important ritual.
On both sides of an axe there are magnificent woven ornament and a figure of a fantastic bird, incrusted with silver thread.
Floral ornament - the tree of the northern pagans or Bible Tree of Life. The trees with crossed stems repeat the forms of ornament on the stones found in Alstadt and Vantaa. They portrayed realistic art scenes: some of them have local origin (on the stone of Alstadt - the story of Sigurd, Fafnir's killer), some came from abroad (the image of the trinity of the Magi at the manger, inscribed on the stone of Dunne).
The bird with long legs and tail can be Phoenix that first emerges in pagan mythology, but then became a symbol of the resurrection of Christ, constancy and faith. On the other hand, the bird may be the representation of Gullinkambi, a cock from Scandinavian mythology. Northern people strongly believed in harsh Heaven - Valhalla, where the warriors had the battles every day, and the same evening they had a feast and fun. According to the legend, every morning the winners and the losers waked up from the cry of Gullinkambi and the battles and feasts repeated.
Briefly about the Mammen
The manner of character images on the axe is extremely interesting. The style in which the painting is made, existed in Denmark in 960-1020 years, and can be easily defined - it has quite noticeable, characteristic features.
If you look at the image in which you don`t observe the symmetry, it clearly emerges a rich ornament, if the limbs of animals or birds have spiral patterns – that is Mammen.
It is believed that the style was the result of foreign influence. The style creates a sense of contrast. Images of animals and birds have no constant shape – they contract and widen.
Mammen style is the 'descendant' of the style called Elling, they are often difficult to distinguish from each other. Though Mammen have no apparent symmetry, it has an incredible power and expression. This is a magnificent synthesis of Scandinavian and Western European art – the last one brings half-naturalistic images of animals and plant ornamentation.
It is necessary to specify that before Mammen, plants and leaves as the main form in the ornaments were not used.
The belief that the battle axe was the main weapon of the Vikings is under a good reason: in fact, it was used by the northern soldiers often - and not only in battles, but in the economy and in the rituals. However, archaeological finds suggest that in the later period of the Viking Age, the battle axe was more affordable alternative to stinging spears and swords. The representatives of the upper class preferred these types of weapon.
In rich Viking settlements the axes trimmed with silver and gold are often found. They like the swords, carried not only the function of weapon, but also a symbol of social status of the owner. The blade of axes had different forms. In the prediction that Velva addressed to Odin, there are three separate periods - the era of the axe, the sword and the wolf preceding Ragnarok, which Odin could only delay but not prevent.
